No matter how you look at it the concept and procedure of designing a garden is the same whoever it may be done by. As an individual you will have many ideas about what you would like to see in your garden area, hard landscaping, soft landscaping, recreational areas, borders, plants so its vital you get the person ( or business ) with the same concept. A common problem is that sometimes designers are focused on a certain style, one they are comfortable with, and they understand its details.

This can become a hole which sometimes prevents clients from showing there true feelings for the garden. You could be led by trends, colours, more hard landscaping than you originally planned and so more cost, and the ease of management and tranquility you were looking for is not quite there.

When you invest in your garden its an investment to your future

And it adds value to your home personally and financially

When I started garden design I had one thing in mind, to plan and create gardens so that my passion, experience, knowledge and hard work over the years would be put to good use. As a designer and horticulturist I don’t have a solid focus on just one type of garden mainly because plants belong in every garden, they give colour, interest and life and they make the garden a room all on its own.

There is also the point that many people need hard spaces for children, entertaining, mobility , well all this can easily be planned into a garden design. Its all about structure, put the frame in and then let the plants soften the hard edges, fragrance as you brush past leaves, that unexpected plant in flower ( wasn’t there yesterday ) a surprise round every corner, but most importantly it reflects who you are, its your garden, enjoy it.

Pests,plants and management

Its all about keeping your plants looking good and healthy all year round, the soil, nutrients and plant selection.

Use your plants to blend with you and the garden, renovate old borders, re-plan areas, enhance other features ( Conservatory, Extension, Garden Room ) let them work with you not against you.

When I was training at Bristol Zoological Gardens, we had a reputation to keep up and the team of gardeners always did it with a passion.
