Hi, my name is Mark Rice and my fascination with plants, flowers, trees and the natural world has been with me from an early age, the birds, animals and thousands of insects that bring it alive always tell me life is for living, enjoying and learning, with this in a garden who could stay indoors ?
Garden Design, what does it really mean, extravagant drawings, months of work, just the mention of the word design often only brings up pound signs.
When I started garden design I had one thing in mind, to plan and create gardens so that my passion, experience, knowledge and hard work over the years would be put to good use. As a designer and horticulturist I don’t have a solid focus on just one type of garden mainly because plants belong in every garden, they give colour, interest and life and they make the garden a room all on its own.
I have seen many gardens that have just needed a little attention, re-shaping the borders, replenishing the plants, creating new areas ( hard and soft ), or solving that awkward spot you just haven’t tackled yet. But it could also be a complete change, make it more usable, let the garden grow with the family especially as the children grow older. And of course make it manageable, fit in with your lifestyle, commitments and how much time you want to spend looking after it. gardens can be suited to everybody with just a little thought, understanding and common sense. Its important to understand my clients needs and thier limitations before anything else. So regardless of the size of space you have or the style you like-
A garden is only a garden when managed with intent and passion
Pests,plants and management
Its all about keeping your plants looking good and healthy all year round, the soil, nutrients and plant selection.
Garden management involves consistent attention to detail, plan ahead, plants and positioning, look after the soil ( its a plants feet ), sustaining a garden requires ongoing care and this can be achieved around any bodys lifestyle, it won’t run on autopilot.
Everyday is educational, therapeutic, inspiring when you see what you have grown or nurtured, artistic in the shape and colour of its inhabitants PLANTS
Use your plants to blend with you and the garden, renovate old borders, re-plan areas, enhance other features ( Conservatory, Extension, Garden Room ) let them work with you not against you
Work on measuring and design, costing, consult with clients on any changes or problem areas, interpret plans, design and create outdoor spaces, ongoing landscape management, analyse soil conditions to optimise plant health and growth, sensitivity to landscape quality, analyse problems in terms of design and physical form.
No set styles in our designs as every garden and client are unique in their own right, from courtyard to entrances ( first impressions ), to front gardens to large areas or gardens.
Detailed report on your garden area - Covering all aspects so you can plan and manage it smoothly
Current situation - Sometimes it helps to have a view from another person to the positive points your garden has
Evaluating health and condition of plants, selecting the best plants for your specific environment ( every garden is different ), managing soil, pests and diseases, making your garden adaptable, a Horticultural Consultant will make sure your garden flourishes because it is tended with INTENTION.
Border Planning - Landscape Planting - Courtyard Planting - Using the right plants in the right environments
Plants grow differently in each garden, we often hear about ‘‘right plant right place’’ and that can make some people think that they can only have certain plants in there gardens. This is not true, if you want a particular plant in your garden, create an area for it and give it the attention it needs. Border planning can do just that. All plants positioned on a plan in the border, full list of how to look after them and keep them healthy, any specific needs, and if you would like a particular plant or species, how to create the area for them. Full back up after if advice is needed. All garden planning should be done with time, think now for next year, that display you want is just a plan away.
